What to Remember When Buying a Foosball Table

The following are the factors you should keep in mind when you go shopping for a foosball table:

  1. Size

Don’t purchase a foosball table on a whim. Do some prior calculations. In particular, measure the available space in your house or in your office. This will help determine two things. One, what foosball table size is sensible. Two, where you are going to put the table: for instance, it may turn out that the basement is not big enough, but you actually have room in the garage if you move things around.

Remember that you are not just measuring the actual amount of space the table will take. You also need to move around, so you have to factor in moving-around space as well. Add three or four feet as your area of movement.

Don’t forget to allow room for the rods. Note that the sizes usually given for foosball tables don’t take into account the space rods occupy when fully extended.

Another consideration pertaining size is the weight. The weight determines whether the table is portable. Is it light enough to easily move from one room to another without needing much assistance?

  1. Materials

Type of materials helps you determine the quality of a foosball table. The three main types of materials used in making foosball tables are particle board, composite, and solid wood.

Particle board is the cheapest of these materials and the weakest. It can break down over time and is not likely to give you long durability.

High-end tables feature a construction of either composite or solid wood.

We could say that solid wood is the best of the materials thanks to its durability, aesthetic value, and playability. However, solid wood has a problem with humidity. If you store a solid wood foosball table in a humid room, it might start to warp.

Composite has a higher resistance to moisture and humidity. On the other hand, it does not provide the great quality of play you get from solid wood. Due to the humidity issue, composite would be the best choice for an outdoor foosball table.

Note also the thickness of the material. Ensure that the table has a thickness of at least 1 inch.

  1. Rods

Quality of rods is crucial for a foosball table. The type of rods you choose will determine what type of game experience you will have. Rods come in two types, both made of steel.

The first type is hollow steel rods, considered the best. Expensive tables typically have this type of rods. These rods are lighter and can therefore speed up your game to make it maximally lively and fun.

The other type is solid steel rods, which you typically find in mid-level tables. They do not move as fast as hollow steel rods.

  1. Table Surface

The smoother the playing surface, the more fast-paced the game.

Ensure the table surface has a hard finish. Tables that have a high thickness have faster ball travel.

We do not recommend tables that contain stick-on designs on the surface as they can peel and roll up, leaving your table looking ugly. It may even harm the quality of play.

  1. Number of Goalies

The players attached to the last rod in your defense are known as goalies. You may pick a three-man goalie table or a one-man goalie system.

The three-man goalie system is most ideal for beginners and intermediate players. Most American tables feature this system.

European tables, on the other hand, feature a one-man goalie system. Most advanced players who want to level up their game, increase the difficulty, prefer this system.

  1. Players

Look for a table that comes with counterbalanced players. Most people consider this a must-have in their foosball table.

Counterbalanced players stay on the horizontal level when you release them. That means they do not revert to the vertical position. Players who revert can cause you to block your ball. Counterbalanced players give you a clear field to make power shots and enjoy your game to the fullest.

You should also consider the material used to make the players: steel or plastic. Pick steel players, as they are heavier, giving you extra power when you make your shot.

  1. Adjustable Legs

You can do without this feature, but it’s nice to have. Adjustable legs make it possible to adjust the height of your foosball table.  This comes in handy if you have an uneven floor. By adjusting the legs you can make the table level, so as to ensure no side gets an unfair advantage.

Conclusion

The best of these tables is the Hathaway Primo.

The second-best table is the EastPoint Sports Hunter, which has good features such as counterbalanced players, ergonomic wood handles, and high-performance rod bushings that spin and slide to provide maximum speed.

The Hathaway Primo has counterbalanced players to ensure you don’t block your own shots, easy-grip wood handles, cross-supported surface to ensure an even playing field, and its rods move smoothly through E-Z spin bearings.
